I’ve photographed a lot of first birthday parties in Los Angeles and when it comes to the “big party day,” it can get overwhelming for the little guys. A mixed crowd of familiar + unfamiliar faces, lots of noise and a squishy sugar-y cake that is placed in front of them, expected to devour.
That’s how most first birthday parties go, but cute Baby Addisyn rocked her classic girly pink and gold milestone celebration! She was so fun to photograph as she mingled and played with her party guests. At first she was alarmed at my bright flash (the party was held indoors away from the treacherous Las Vegas heat) but after a few photos snapped, she expected it and prepared by squinting her eyes – what a smart little cookie!
When it came time to smash her cake, Baby Addisyn knew exactly what to do and dug right in! Most kids are intimidated by birthday cake at this age but she worked the camera and her crowd by smiling big as she reached in for more. Addisyn loved her cake so much that she even did a face plant at the end to make the cake smash complete.
First birthday celebrations are a lot of fun to photograph since they bring family in from all sides. I love documenting the hugs, the jokes and the reminiscing over old memories. In fact after I delivered all the party photos, Cassandra (Addisyn’s mom) wrote me the sweetest email I could have received:
“I just saw the pictures!!! Thank you so much! Thank you seriously isn’t enough. You captured so many wonderful moments! The day was a little stressful and a blur for me so it’s amazing to look back and see so many smiles! These are memories we will have and cherish forever.”
Technology might always be advancing to the point where people are able to take more photos on their own, but this is exactly why you should hire a professional photographer. A lot of planning goes into parties (especially when you throw the party yourself) and naturally stress follows. Cassandra was able to look back and see that all her party guests had a fantastic time even though she was preoccupied with hosting. Her little girl’s first birthday party was a success!
